]]> Project Summary

Residents of the Bundelkhand region experience acute scarcity of water for agricultural and domestic use. The project has been able to demonstrate a successful model for drinking water supply. This included management of demand for water, supply of water, development and strengthening of institutions that undertake decisions related to water management, and management of sanitation at the personal, household and village level.

Conjunctive use of water resources was implemented through groundwater based piped water supply, hand pumps, rooftop rainwater harvesting and revival of dug wells. The source to sink approach was established and water-loop was closed. With reduced distance to access a source of water, drudgery was reduced for women and village level conflicts were also reduced. The project resulted in adequate, reliable and safe water being made available to 95% of households. Also, demand was generated from the local government and communities for implementation of a similar programme in nearby villages.

Outputs

  1. Baseline studies, training programmes for staff, exposure visits and awareness building workshops and other IEC activities were conducted.
  2. Around 9 Water User Groups were formed.
  3. Water quality testing was done to check for bacteriological contamination.
  4. A total of Rs. 220 lakhs was leveraged for the project, of which around 50 lakhs was from community contributions and the rest from various government schemes, such as Total Sanitation Campaign and Mahatma Gandhi national Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and NABARD.
  5. Rainwater harvesting:
    • One community rainwater harvesting structure built.
    • More than 10 traditional rainwater harvesting structures revived.
  6. A number of household hardware interventions was put in place:
    • Over a 100 households were given water connections.
    • Over 20 household filters were installed.
    • Over 70 rooftop rainwater harvesting structures built
  7. A number of public, decentralized drinking water sources and hardware were created:
    • More than 10 open wells constructed.
    • More than 5 borewells constructed.
    • Around 30 hand pumps installed.
    • Over a 100 public stand posts constructed
    • More than five community filters were installed,
    • Around 9 mini water supply systems were constructed.
  8. Source sustainability was an important part of the project.
    • Around 45 groundwater recharge structures were established.
    • More than 5 farm ponds were built.
  9. In order to close the loop on water sanitation issues were also addressed:
    • Over 690 families were motivated to construct double pit toilets.
    • Around 2 families were motivated to construct Ecosan toilets.
    • More than 80 families were motivated to construct soak pits.
