Project Summary

The main domestic water supply in Leh is groundwater, and because the tourism industry in the area has experienced phenomenal growth, there has been a significant rise in the number of bore-wells dug. This increasing abstraction of groundwater is occurring in the absence of policy- and community-led stewardship of natural water resources.

This project aims to generate scientific knowledge regarding the nature and extent of the groundwater resource and to document current water usage practices. It will develop a comprehensive, knowledge-based approach to sustainable use and management of water in the project village. The end goal is to identify alternative technological solutions of water use practices for sustainable groundwater management, and to disseminate the information among the user groups. The project seeks to reach out to decision makers and assist stakeholder groups in developing and promoting guidelines and policy strategies for the same.

Outputs

  1. Groundwater assessment report for Leh Town, including aquifer and hydro geological mapping, investigation ofbore wells, water quality monitoring, and weather monitoring.
  2. Report on water usage patterns among different user groups – domestic, commercial (hospitality industry), and agricultural.
  3. IEC materials – posters, pamphlets, video and audio documentaries, and print articles
  4. Community-based campaign on the need for groundwater management, including the identification of community leaders and the implementation of awareness and discussion nights
  5. Guidelines on water usage for major user groups.
  6. Workshop on policy options for groundwater management.
  7. Document on policy recommendations, based on the results of the workshop.
  8. Pilots on socio-technological alternatives for rational water usage, identified based on the results of the study on water usage patterns.
