Project Summary

The traditional water harvesting systems of western Rajasthan are a science, elaborated by the people, to translate their experience with water into practice. For harvesting each type of water, they have engineered a structure.

Outputs

  1. Collecting and compiling baseline information to measure impact after intervention activities.
  2. Constructing/repairing traditional water structures in Barmer and Jaisalmer districts.
  3. Reviving the Sakhatwali river in Alwar district, involving the user community.

Project Summary

Scanty rainfall coupled with a lack of groundwater often leads to acute water scarcity in parts of Western Rajasthan. Anchored by village level institutions, Sambhaav has begun reviving traditional water harvesting systems which had benefited the local communities in the area.

One of the biggest successes of this project has been the development of community leaders and a sense of ownership over their own assets and water management. The project has helped reduce distress migration and improved the quality of life of women, who previously used to spend several hours in a day travelling long distances for availing drinking water.

Outputs

  1. A successful Information, Education, Communication (IEC) component ensured that the people came forward to contribute Rs. 9 lakhs towards the project activities.
  2. Work on revival of traditional water harvesting systems was done in 30 villages.
    • Around 9 traditional rainwater harvesting structures revived.
    • Over 40 Open wells constructed.
    • Around 5 Groundwater recharge structures built.
    • Around 3 farm ponds constructed.

Project Summary

Developing leadership in the water sector means proactively looking for inspired individuals spread across the country, establishing contact, entering into dialogue and then identifying areas where they would want to work on and supporting the same. Sambhaav  will identify, dialogue with, and support committed individuals and facilitate their leadership skills, enabling such leaders to execute their ideas on water management through pilot projects. It will also build leadership among staff in partner organizations which will help create a second rung of leaders who will take the vision of the organization forward.

Outputs

The planned interventions are:

  1. Analysing  and documenting existing leadership, building models and finding best practices.
  2. Developing a framework  to make the fellowship model operational.
  3. Identifying potential candidates.
  4. Organising field visits to demonstrate live models of leadership building in order to inspire change.
  5. Identifying initiatives in present partner organisations to develop leadership within the organisation and the grassroots and strengthen the same.
  6. Conducting orientation programmes for partner organisation in order to inspire and embed the process of leadership building in the organisational ethos.
  7. Providing support to such initiatives within partner organisations if they show/express willingness to pursue the same.
